Childish Themed Scratch Cards Slammed by Lottery Group

Camelot, the official operator of the UK national lottery has been accused of attempting to target a younger market by using themes that include Monopoly and Pac Man on the new scratch card games.

The scratch cards and lottery tickets are also sold online and it is feared that the themes of the new scratch card games with their bright animations and childish graphics will appeal to youngsters.

According to a report in The Daily Mail these scratch cards are often displayed near sweets and gum where youngsters usually head to in a store and it could, therefore, be easy for a child younger than the minimum age of 16, to purchase these instant-win cards.

Paddy O’Donnel, a Professor of Psychology from the University of Glasgow, was quoted in the newspapers as saying that the theme of a scratch card is initially very important as it is what first attracts young people and once a child gets introduced to scratch cards it can lead to more serious forms of gambling.

The Gambling Commission recently issued a report stating that 7% of children between the ages of 11 and 15 years old admitted that they had spent their own money purchasing a scratch card in the previous few days.

The lottery group has been criticized for the recent themes on the scratch cards that include one which is based on the children’s board game Mousetrap.

However, Camelot stated that the childish theme would not appeal to modern fourteen or fifteen year olds who would probably not consider a board game to be cool.
